Every morning when I fill my bird feeder, I put a row of sunflower seeds on the porch rail and stand there for a while to see who is the bravest birdie. Who do you think wins every time?
We have bluejays, cardinals, chickadees, doves, flycatchers, goldfinches, house finches, juncos, pileated woodpeckers, purple finches, red-bellied woodpeckers, red-headed woodpeckers, rose-breasted grosbeaks, sparrows and tufted titmice.
The first bird to come get a sunflower seed, every single time, is the black-capped chickadee.
The smartest birdie is the lady cardinal. She’s the one who comes over when she hears me grinding flaxseed for my banana-blueberry shake.
